Michig-ramblings

Most of the time, when I visit a state that doesn’t directly border Iowa, I think to myself, “I should move here!”. It’s nothing against Iowa or its bordering states, it’s just that I’m here (and there) enough. And I’ll admit, when we were in Arizona earlier this summer, I thought, “I am glad we are here for vacation”, but also “I don’t need to live here, that’s fine”.

So now that I have offended seven states, I’ll get to my point: I was daydreaming about moving to Michigan this weekend while I was there. Understand, I am not going to move to Michigan. But those trees and hills they’ve got up there (and bears? oh my!), they had me, like Ann Perkins in season six of Parks & Rec, hearing Michigan’s siren’s call.

But Ann can have her state, and I will just visit it on rare and blessed occasions — like this past weekend, for example, when I went there to play some music!

I had two gigs up in, what I was referring to as “Northern Michigan”, but I now understand after being corrected by native Michiganders, was the northern part of central Michigan (total Iowan mistake, how embarrassing). The first gig was near Cadillac, Michigan at Manton Christian Camp, and the second gig was in Zeeland, Michigan at Waypoint Community Church.

Okay, but the Cadillac (your grandparent’s iconic car) is named after Cadillac, Michigan, right? Or are both named after something else, like a river or something of First Nations significance? If you are reading this far in (then congratulations, you are either my mom or Matt’s mom), and you know the answer to my question (do you, Paula and Laurie?), then leave a comment or contact me via carrier pigeon to let me know!

Oh, and that photo above is of the venue near Cadillac (Manton Christian Camp).

This photo (above) is from Waypoint Community Church in Zeeland. A church service outside when the temp’s in the mid 70s and it’s not humid?! What a dream!

So, in summary, I got the opportunity to go to Michigan and sing a bunch of my songs for people, and I’m really thankful for that, and I had a great time, and also I drove for eight hours today and now I am delirious. This blog post has has now become a PSA against driving for a long time and blogging before you’ve gotten a chance to unwind for the evening.

Maybe I was delirious in that photo too. It’s impossible to know for sure.
